About Me
My name is Arija Berzitis. I have been proofreading and copy editing for most of my adult career. After graduating with an Honours BA in English Literature from the University of Toronto, I worked in the magazine industry for about 10 years before moving into financial printing at a corporate press in Don Mills, ON. I learned all about fonts and design from there, eventually teaching a proprietary typesetting system to typesetters in Toronto and India. However, I always wanted to get back into copy editing, so I began courses in copy editing, publishing and proofreading through Toronto Metropolitan University, then known as Ryerson Polytechnic University about 15 years ago and finally qualifying for their Publishing Certificate in 2024.
I am Canadian and do most of my work using Canadian standards and vernacular. However, I have also edited in U.S. English, British English, and proofreading in French using French standards/conventions.
A bit about Editors’ Association of Canada/Association canadienne des réviseurs: I am currently the director of English Standards and Certification for Editors Canada and I have been in that role for five years.
